THE CARER

2016, feature, 35mm, colour, 89 min., 1:1,85, Dolby Digital

Hungary, United Kingdom

Theatrical legend, SIR MICHAEL GIFFORD is terminally ill. He’s also foul-mouthed, irascible, and generally impossible. Into his fraught household comes Hungarian immigrant girl DOROTTYA to act as yet another in a long line of badly treated caregivers.

Dorottya secretly hopes to become Michael’s acting pupil but Michael bullies and exploits her until animpromptu exchange from Hamlet reveals a mutual love of Shakespeare and their relationship gradually changes. As Michael mellows, Dorottya transcends her own selfish ambitions, and each learns some valuable lessons. However, when Michael is offered a Lifetime Achievement Award and Dorottya persuades him to accept it in person, the resulting fallout sees Dorottya fired and Michael in hospital. Their relationship has given both of them renewed confidence, however, and together they make it to the Awards Ceremony.

Initially, this seems like a mistake. Michael looks completely out of his depth and the audience fears for his health. However,it’s just awell rehearsed double act: Michael rises to the occasion with a show-stealing speech and ends, prompted by Dorottya, with “To be or not to be.”–a famous question, to which he now supplies the answer -thunderedin his famous voice

“And the answer is TO BE!”

Critical blurbs about THE CARER

A wonderful screenplay full of wit and brimstone drives this - I was going to write charming but it's much tougher than that - emotionally satisfying and dramatically satisfying comedy.

Andrew L. Urban

Urban Cinefile (AU)

It's funny, unexpected and profoundly moving.

Louise Keller

Urban Cinefile (AU)

The Carer is an undeniably pleasant watch that features Brian Cox in his best cinematic screen role in some time.

Freda Cooper

Britflicks

The Carer emerges as a generally endearing, even heart-warming film that succeeds in spite of its flaws.

Rob Carnevale

Indie London

An engaging and sweetly observed comedy-drama, where Brian Cox seizes the opportunity to turn the twinkly-eyed factor up to eleven.

Matthew Turner

WOW247 (UK)

It's a slight but touching story, and the film also makes some sharp observations about the immigrant experience. I liked it.

Brian Viner

Daily Mail (UK)

You’ll most likely come away from The Carer feeling good about having seen it.

Kevin Matthews

Flickfeast

The perfect mix of comedy and tragedy, combined with superb performances from all the actors involved, makes the movie amusing to watch.

Giampietro Balia

Cineurope

A fascinating character piece with an excellent performance from Brian Cox.

Craig McKenzie

Kneel Before Blog

The Carer is full of heart charm and lots of laughter, but it is Brian Cox’s commanding lead performance that truly ignites the screen, elevating and shaping this simple film into something quite special.

Allan Brown

Movie Review World

Now after seeing The Carer I am desperate for someone to film Cox's Lear. It would be amazing.

Christine Powley

Otago Daily Times (NZ)

For devotees of Cinema Gold who can cope with clever, hilarious dialogue and old folksy foibles, it is a must-see.

Peter Lampp

Stuff (NZ)

The Carer is by turns poignant, funny, sad and uplifting. [...] Beautifully and lovingly filmed and directed in an unobtrusive, polished way, The Carer is a true gem.

Douglas Sutherland

Weekend Notes (AU)

The Carer is a bittersweet examination of aging. It has both a nostalgic melancholy and a vibrant energy that ebb and flow through the course of the piece.

David O’Connell
